Intro to Architecture

Based on the reading of Tschumi's Sequences, I focused on recording the Space, Event, and Movement at an outdoor seating area of a restaurant near campus. In the span of 30 minutes, I recorded five 3-minute observations of the traffic and flow of the site as a customer. By distinguishing 4 types of movements—pedestrians/customers, staff, food, and clean up—I discovered important relationships between each of these movements.
This project is an enclosure that exaggerates density and reacts to flows throughout the site. After studying the traffic and patterns of movement in an outdoor cafe, I designed a system that responds to the specific circumstances of eating in an urban context. The unidirectional appendages in this system reflect and echo movements near and far, heightening our experience of density and flow through touch, sound, and sight. This enclosure attracts customers, efficiently compartmentalizes them, and questions our expectations of public and private space in a dining experience.
